About Brielle, NJ

The Brielle area contains archeological evidence of Lenape hunting camps, indicating long-standing, pre-European activity. The first Europeans settled in the area known as Shrewsbury Township in the late 1600s, which was populated mostly by Dutch and English homesteaders. During the American Revolutionary War, the local Union Salt Works was sacked by the British, and the names Union Landing and later only Union applied to the area. The Borough of Brielle—named for the town of Brielle in the Netherlands–began as a vacation community formed by local businessmen in 1881. Currently, Brielle, NJ, has over 4,700 residents. Since World War II, the borough has grown to become a residential town whose citizens commute to the New York metropolitan area.
